Guatemala 2011 mission trip update

We are counting the weeks --- only nine more --- until we leave for Guatemala. The 2011 team consists of fifteen people --- eight men, five women and two pre-teen girls. Five are first-time mission trippers. It's always exciting to take first-timers with us. Almost every first-timer has become a repeat volunteer.

It is a joy to reunite with long time friends and to make new ones each year. This picture is of Kathy and young friend, Maria. We have had contact with her and her family for eight years. She brings smiles to everyone she meets.

If you would like to donate money or supplies for our trip, we would be more than happy to accept either/both. Checks should be payable to Laotto Wesleyan Church and mailed to our address in Fort Wayne. Supplies we still need: New or like-new shoes and sandals (size 9 or smaller, low or no-heel), fingernail clippers, combs, travel size toothpaste, toothbrushes.

We appreciate all of the help and support we have received over the years and we wouldn't want to go without our friends and family praying for us.

One moment

Life can change so quickly. One moment life is going along 'normally' and then in the next moment life will never be 'normal' again.

My nephew, Neil Matthew Rossio, had a severe asthma attack and heart attack on Friday, November 26th. He now has brain damage. One moment with us. The next moment no response.

Being with my sister, niece and ex-brother-in-law today was bittersweet. We haven't been 'together' for many years and it took this serious moment for that to happen.

I am thankful for each moment I have with my family and friends. Moments that matter. Moments that count. Moments that can't be erased from my memory.

Which made me think about the moment when Jesus will come back. Or the moment I meet Him. I don't want to miss that moment. I am ready and I pray those I love are ready as well.

It's amazing how one moment can forever change so many other moments.

Phil assisting with the Happy Feet ministry at Tzuecubal Church

Anyone (High school juniors and older) interested in joining our mission work team needs to attend the informational meeting on Saturday, January 30th, 10:00 a.m. at Laotto Wesleyan Church, in Laotto, Indiana. The meeting will last approximately 1.5 hrs. We will serve a light lunch at the end of the meeting.

Please contact me to let me know if you will be attending the meeting so we can plan accordingly for lunch and info packets.

Cost is approximately $1650 per person which includes the construction costs, travel, food, lodging, international insurance, in-country travel, IMPACTO staff cost (our team's portion) and interpreters.

Activities will include construction of a small cinder block home, Happy Feet shoe & sandal distribution, crafts & games with children, etc. There is something for everyone to do!

Fundraisers will be discussed at the info meeting.

Children (10 years old through sophomores in high school) may go if a parent accompanies them.

Please pray and ask God if He wants you to be on this team or to help contribute toward the team's expenses.

Phil Troyer is running for Congress but not this Phil Troyer

Due to receiving numerous emails and phone calls over the past few days, I need to clarify that I am not the lawyer Phil Troyer who announced his candidacy for Indiana’s 3rd District Congressional seat currently held by Mark Souder. Although we share the same first and last name, I have never met Mr. Troyer.

I am the Phil Troyer, raised in Laotto, Indiana, son of Pauline and the late Arthur Troyer. I graduated from East Noble High School in 1970, Ball State University BAR ’75 and Indiana Wesleyan University, BMA ’93. I’ve been registered as a licensed professional architect (NCARB, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio) since the late ‘70’s. My architectural firm, Phillip A. Troyer, Inc., relocated to Ludwig Road, Fort Wayne in January 2009 after practicing for nearly 30 years in Laotto.

I appreciate all of the positive comments about my ‘running for congress’ and want to request that all inquisitive voters research and/or contact Phil Troyer, the lawyer, as far as political ideals, qualifications, character, etc. If I ever decide to enter the political arena, I will be sure to contact all of my ‘Facebook and email fans’.

Tuesday afternoons

Somalia, Vietnam, Sudan, Congo, Chad, Burma, Afghanistan, Iraq, Kosovo, Mexico, Ethiopia and the USA. What is the common thread? They are some of the countries representative of the women I am privileged to work with on Tuesday afternoons at a Fort Wayne ministry.

We "teach" conversational English via sewing, knitting and jewelry-making skills. The women also have an opportunity to learn English using a computer program. ESL and parenting classes are open to these beautiful women as well.

Since I have been become a helper in the beginner's sewing room, I know of a few items we regularly use. Thread, metal sewing gauges, Velcro strips, decorative buttons, zippers, fusible webbing and plastic bobbins are always needed. Thanks to Millie M. for delivering a car load of fabric --- it is very much appreciated.

Being with these women is such a blessing to me. Many have come out of extremely difficult situations in their home countries. My friend, Katie, went with me today. She and I talked on the way back home about the fact that women from all around the world have so much in common. No matter what color, race or age, there seems to be a need to be loved, appreciated, cared for and encouraged. I know these women leave each Tuesday feeling loved on and valued. I am grateful for this opportunity and look forward to whatever God has in store for me and His women from every race and culture.

Matt and Natalie's baby boy - our fourth grandchild - arrived at 5:26 p.m. July 28th. He weighed 7 lbs. 4 oz. and was 20.5 inches long with adorable blonde hair. Natalie's room at Community North in Indy was almost vacation-ish but I don't think she felt very vacation-y for a few hours. We are so blessed to have this little guy for a grandson. He is so cuddly and sweet.

Mia & Tim, Eric & Abby, Matt & Janelle and Phil & I waited in the lobby for the big announcement---we received the big news via email from Matt. Shortly thereafter a picture and info was on Facebook. The wonder of the internet and iPhones. After the baby and Natalie were attended to/cared for, Matt and Teresa came out to the lobby to greet us. I can only say there was no shortage of tears.

We are so grateful for this little guy. He is an answer to prayers and truly a gift from God.

Grady Phillip Bohm was born at home on Saturday, July 18, 7:20 a.m. He weighed 10 lbs. 6 oz. and 21 1/4" long. Kelly started having contractions at 6:18 a.m. She asked Jon to call Mary the Midwife at about 6:40 a.m. Mary arrived at approximately 7:19 a.m.---just in time to help with the delivery. It was an emotional, priceless event that I will never forget. Trey and London love their little brother so much. Their Mimi loves all them.

I am learning to be patient. It is not an easy lesson in life. But God is faithful and His timing is perfect. I was originally scheduled to fly back to Indiana on July 19th. Departure is now July 22nd but I may have to change that, too. I have had some days of homesickness and anxiety but all in all the time I have spent here in Phoenix has been wonderful. I am able to read my devotional book and Bible every morning. Before bed each night I listen to Francis Chan's Crazy Love (via audio book) and Trey likes to listen sometimes with me.

Trey and London bring such joy to my life. They make me smile so much. Hanging out with London is the mornings is something I will miss so much. Taking Trey to the Wednesday morning movie has been a delight. Kelly and Jon are VERY easy people to live with and are extremely hospitable. They are both so positive and encouraging. I am feeling recharged and ready to go back to my 'real life' after this baby boy is born. I definitely miss my husband (who is so amazingly good to me, too) and the rest of the family. I am grateful for google video chat and cell phones to help me keep in touch with them.

In a few more days, I will be in Indy to love on the newest addition to the family. What a blessing grandchildren are to this old heart!

By the way, Kelly & I are 14-1 in Scrabble. I think she has memorized the entire Scrabble book of 2 & 3 letter words plus I think she makes some up :)

Possible goal when we retire:
Phil and I live with each of our children for a month (if they would have us, of course). Maybe he and I should buy a 'really nice'* RV and plug in at each of their locations???? Don't get too scared, kids, it won't happen for a long time. :)

My father-in-law, Lee Richards, was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) today. He was admitted on Saturday, June 20th and will immediately start chemotherapy tomorrow. Those of you who know him, know that he is a tough man with a high tolerance so we know he will be a fighter and get back to full strength as soon as possible. He will still need the prayer, love and support of family & friends, which is my reason for sending this out. I am asking for you to send him a card or encouraging note to the hospital so he knows how many people are praying for him.

May 9, 1982 was a special Mother's Day for our family. We received a 23-1/2" long gift from God named Matthew. Matt, you are going to be a terrific father. Your little man will be so spoiled.

May 7, 1988 was another special day in May. The Lord gave us our son, Alex. We still can picture you in blue jip-up pajamas as 'Michael' in Peter Pan saying, "candy, candy".

I have been listening to WBCL 90.3 FM today while in my office. There have been so many songs played to remind me of God's love on this Good Friday. I am thankful that Jesus died on the cross in my place. AND that He rose from the dead AND lives forever AND some day I will see Him face-to-face AND live with Him forever.

Even though the Cubbies didn't win today, it was an incredible day at Goodyear Spring Training Center. We walked from Jon & Kelly's house --- about 10 minutes!

Don't Worry

The older I get the more I tend to worry. I know in my HEAD that I am not supposed to worry but I do. God's Word tells us NOT to worry but to pray. I pray and still worry. Ugh. I asked Phil last night how I can quit worrying and why I worry more now than when I was younger. His words of wisdom and comfort --- "Well, worry is just another sign of old age." Thanks, husband! :)

Matthew 6:25-34

Therefore I tell you, do not WORRY about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are YOU not much more valuable than they? Who of you by WORRYING can add a single hour to his life?

And why do you WORRY about clothes? See how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is

Whew! That's a lot to consider but sounds so simple. I am continuing to learn to "cast my cares and anxieties on Him". I think I am a very slow learner. I am thankful for a very patient God.

Today is our daughter-in-law's birthday. She is married to our son, Matthew. We love her and are so happy she is a part of the Troyer tribe. We feel like we are a part of the Richards family, too.

We celebrated her birthday at Greek Island in Indy last night. Our 'intimate' dinner included 10 people seated in an area for about 6. Fun for everyone - especially the guy behind us who recorded the belly dancer on his cell phone when his wife was in the restroom :)

During dinner tonight, my husband told me something that happened to him this past Sunday. I felt compelled to share it with my blog readers - to encourage you to obey the promptings of the Holy Spirit. This is not to "toot" his horn but rather to give the glory to God.

We went to Matt & Natalie's church in Indy on Sunday. An older couple (older than us) was sitting directly in front of us. Phil struck up a conversation with them and discovered their house had burned down a couple of weeks ago and that they are living in a hotel but doing okay.

Phil said he felt the Lord nudging him to give the couple something so after church was over, he gave the man a $50 bill. Mind you, he does NOT usually have a $50 bill in his wallet but this was cash left over from his birthday or Christmas. The man was a surprised by the gift and Phil assured him that the Lord laid it on his heart to do this for them.

The story does not end with the gift to the couple because a few days later, Phil needed to pay for something and pulled out his wallet to do so. He was surprised when he found ANOTHER $50 bill in his wallet.

I don't know about you - but that brought tears to my eyes. I don't know how God does what He does but I truly believe He blesses us when we obey Him. The blessing does NOT always come in the form of money but He always blesses!

I hope this story encourages you to listen and obey the Lord's promptings, leadings, nudgings or whatever you may call them. Give with joy!

Anyone who knows me knows I love college basketball and that one of the main reasons we have cable tv is so I can watch March Madness. Anyway, one of Alex's fraternity brothers is on the Purdue basketball team and let us use two of his tickets this past Saturday for the Michigan game.

Phil and I thought we could take both of the kids with us and hold them on our laps but when we got to the ticket booth found out they had to have their own tickets, too. Since my husband knew how much going to this game meant to me --- he gave up the opportunity and went to the FIJI house to watch the game with baby London.

Trey and I had a ball! Our seats were just a few rows behind the CBS tv announcer, Clark Kellogg. I had to keep reminding Trey NOT to cheer when Michigan scored because we were sandwiched in the middle of the Purdue players' families and friends. Trey got excited when ANYONE scored a basket.

Thanks to Alex and Bobby for hooking us up with these awesome tickets. Trey and I had a very special time together. Phil's Smart car

Phil has been wanting this car for quite some time. He read and read and read about it for over a year before putting a deposit down on one. We went into the Smart Indy dealership a few weeks ago and they had an 'orphan' which we quickly adopted. The Smart car gets close to 50 mpg. First service/oil change is at 10,000 miles. I "followed" Phil in my 'dumb' van from Indy to Fort Wayne and could hardly keep up with him --- and I was doing 76 mph! We feel like this was a very 'smart' choice.

We woke up today surrounded by snow and ice. It was so beautiful but caused a lot of problems for people in northeast Indiana.

It took about an hour to get the van door open. Lots of tree limbs are down and many people are without electricity. I am grateful for the many service people who are restoring power to those who need it! So far we are okay. Just lots of limbs to clean up.

It was an emotional day on Tuesday. We signed the closing papers and no longer reside in Laotto. We have had a few months to process and prepare for this change but it has been hard (especially for me, Kathy). So many wonderful memories and fun times in that home...pool parties, church parties, friends over for dinner, corn hole, hillbilly golf, charades, dominoes, Sunday School class parties a long time ago, exchange students, overnight guests, babies, grandbabies...the list goes on and on. I pray the new owners find as much joy and happiness there as we did. We will never forget our 29 years there.

Scott is in town for awhile. So is Katie. They worked all day organizing, sorting through boxes, decorating, placing items around the house and then they made breakfast for supper tonight. Pancakes, bacon, eggs, juice and coffee --- it was delicious, as usual. AND we had our very first dinner guests - Jennifer and Aaron. So nice to have people in our home.

Earlier in the day, Pauline (Phil's mom/my mother-in-law) and Julie G helped me clean the Laotto house. They worked like crazy women! The house is spotless and ready for the new owners to move in tomorrow.

Phil and I are truly blessed. Good friends. Good family. An awesome God.

They asked to help us do something so we gave them the Christmas tree decorating job. These two are as sweet as it gets. So is the ice cream topping.

Pauline, Christy G and Kay D helped pack and clean several rooms of our Laotto house last night. These are incredible women who mean the world to us. Phil and I can't thank them enough for all of their encouragement, hard work and help. 29 years of "stuff" is a bit overwhelming to tackle alone.

Phil and Pauline cleaned and swept the basement and the bedrooms upstairs. Pauline made a delicious 10-bean soup for dinner.

Christy and Kay went through the canned goods and food items checking expiration dates --- tossing out quite a few things that were beyond their "use by" date. Christy brought Buckeyes and Mexican wedding cakes which we devoured while we packed and talked.

Believe it or not, I did not take any more pictures on Thanksgiving Day. We had a wonderful time at Grandma Troyer's house. She invited half of the world to her house for a pitch-in dinner as usual. It was good to catch up with friends, Phil's cousins and extended family.

In the evening we went to the Richards homestead for another delicious dinner and evening of Would You Rather? (the sick, twisted and wrong version). So much fun. Lots of laughs.

I have much to be thankful for - my faith, family, friends, church family, health, a home, our business plus chocolate, raspberry hot cocoa, coconut shrimp, good books, Mexican restaurants, flan, vacations, missions work in Guatemala, email, iChatting - and so much more. God is so good to me. I am so thankful!

Today is our first grandchild's 3rd birthday. Trey was born in Syracuse, NY, but now lives in Phoenix with his mom, dad and baby sister. No words can express the joy a grandchild brings to a grandparent. Trey brings so much laughter and love to Phil and I. He is a charming young man and we enjoy spending time with him whenever it is possible.

Just recently we were talking to him on the phone about his birthday presents. He said, "Let's iChat". We just cracked up.

30 years ago at 12:53 a.m., Phil and I wept together as our first child was born in Ball Memorial Hospital. Scott weighed in at 8 lbs. 1 oz. and 21" long. His due date was November 26 and he only missed making that date by 53 minutes.

We could not believe that this little bundle was really ours. We were so inexperienced. Scott was born with tons of "frosted" hair. The nurses brought him in during the middle of the night to show me how they had styled his hair by parting it down the middle. Those were the days before babies stayed with their mommas in the same room.

We are so proud of Scott. He is a godly man. He loves music. Writing, playing, teaching, producing, recording, performing --- anything to do with music. God has blessed him with so many talents but we know his most pleasurable activity is anything to do with music. Next comes good food, travel and deep conversations.

Happy birthday, Scott, and may God continue to use you to build His kingdom and may you continue to be used by Him.

We lost an entire week due to inspection delays. Ugh. But now we are scheduled for the balance of the insulation and drywall installation.

It's an adventure choosing materials, fixtures, carpet, tile, etc. If we had tons of money, it would be even more enjoyable. Why is it everything we like and pick out initially has the highest price tag on it??? So, we have to shop around and online. Takes so much time and energy but we want to get the best value for the moolah.

Monday, October 27 is Phil's 56th birthday.

We met at Ball State University way back in September 1972. It has been quite a ride since then. Babies, high school and college graduations, master's degree, weddings, funerals, grandbabies, business ups and downs, family times, vacations, missions trips, remodeling and now the big move --- never a dull moment.

I am so grateful for this man. He is my hero. He loves God. He loves me. He loves his family. He loves his friends. He loves his church. He loves the people of Guatemala. He is a fun, faithful husband AND a devoted father and grandfather. He cares for and takes care of lots of people. I am so blessed.

Any of you that know Matthew know he is a maniac die hard Cubs fan. When I picked Trey, London & Kel up at the Fort Wayne airport yesterday, I told Trey that Matt was so sad because his Cubbies lost their first play off game on Monday night. He kept repeating over and over and over, "Unkie Matt is sad because the Cubbies lost". Because the Cubs lost again last night, he has mentioned it several times today. He is so adorable and so concerned about Unkie Matt being sad.

Good news --- the only family members who were selected to be in the drawing to have a chance to buy play off tickets were Matt and I. At 1:00 p.m. today, Matt and I both were online to enter a virtual waiting room to purchase tickets. I waited about 20 minutes before entering the store and after choosing "best seats available" was ALLOWED to purchase two tickets in the Terrace area for the potential October 10th game at Wrigley Field. Matt got two standing room only tickets. Mine are printed and waiting for the Cubs to win the next three games over the LA Dodgers. Now the question is --- do I give them to Matt or do I sell them online for extra cash???? Hmmmm...big decision...Matt or money??? :)

As Trey-man says, "Go, Cubbies". I hope they pull this off.

It may not come as a surprise to most of you that my mind works in weird ways. I was thinking this morning about what I would like to have engraved on my tombstone when I am gone. Over the years I have been in many cemetaries and it fascinates me to see what people have put on their grave markers. I am not making light of death - just contemplating what we all have to face at some point in time.

Some of my ideas:

She lived by faith, was known by love and was a voice of hope

Loving wife, devoted mother, crazy grandmother and fun-loving friend

She loved Jesus, her family and friends and the people of Guatemala

She had the time of her life

She is grateful, thankful and with her Jesus forever. Party on.

I have been thinking a lot about what it means to being an American Christian. We have discussed this topic many times with family. These are my opinions:

1. I am BLESSED to be an American.
2. I SUPPORT our troops (my brother and sister-in-law are both serving in Afghanistan) although I do not always support our involvements.
3. I BELIEVE that the words American and Christian are NOT synonymous. Just because I live in America does not mean I am a Christian.
4. I am GRATEFUL that God's love and grace extend far beyond the borders of the USA.
5. I am SADDENED for those who elevate our country over God's Kingdom.
6. I THINK we have a responsibility to share with others who are hurting, poor and neglected.
7. I HOPE God will keep pouring out His blessings on us so that we can continue to extend His love to those who so desperately need it (and doesn't that include just about everyone?).
8. I would LIKE to believe that I am not alone in my thinking but even if I am, I still believe.
9. I DESIRE His favor upon on me.
10. I LOOK forward to the day when God's Kingdom is the only kingdom we love and serve.

I really didn't know how to express what is on my heart today. So I ramble on. I have grown to love people from all walks of life. Different cultures. Different languages. Different looking. But in getting to know these "different" people, I have realized that they are really not so different than me. They long for love and acceptance, peace and prosperity, grace and forgiveness.

I am grateful that God's Kingdom is for ANYONE who calls upon and believes in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, the Savior. "May His kingdom come and His will be done on earth as it is in heaven".

Last week I had $50 of family photos printed at Meijer on Lima Road. I picked up my packages at the photo counter, finished my shopping, paid for my purchases and left the store. While driving home I started thinking about my total bill including groceries and photos and felt like something was not right. I looked at my receipt and there was definitely an error. The clerk rang my photos up for $1.00 instead of the $50 something it should have been.

I called the store to tell them of my underpayment. I spoke with several people before being put on hold for over 10 minutes. No one seemed to know what to do. I finally gave up and hung up the phone.

I went back to Meijer yesterday. After paying for my groceries, I asked the clerk what I should do about paying for the pictures I wasn't charged for last week --- she looked at me like I was out of my mind. She didn't know what I should do. So I went to the Service Center and told the clerk what had transpired. She looked puzzled and finally said that I should pay $45 and we would call it even. She eventually thanked me for being honest but I could tell she thought I was crazy.

Taiwan Tea House & Boba Tea

Matt went to the Colts game right after church on Sunday --- soooo --- Eric, Natalie, Phil and I went to the Taiwan Tea House for lunch.

My first taste of "bubble tea" as Natalie fondly calls it. Eric's mango was very good. Phil's red plum was not so good. Boba is large cooked tapioca in the bottom of the drink.

I also had edamame for an appetizer for the first time and it was extremely yummy. My shrimp linguini was scrump-dilly-icious.

Sorry you had to miss it, Matt.
